Hello all! Allyn here! I am a sophomore at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. I am a double major in Advertising and English and considering a graphic design minor (I have to talk to my advisor first). I am living on campus for the school year but I am from the greater St. Louis area and will likely return there between semesters to work or intern. I used to simply go to my classes and return to my hall. I had so much free time! No really, I had so much free time I complained that I had too much and was bored for the beginning of my time here at Drake. I decided to join some activities shortly after.
So now I’m involved in so many things that I actually have to use my planner. I enjoy writing in my planner though, it makes me feel like a boss lady. The only thing I have stopped doing is the marching band. It took up so much time that I was unable to commit my time to any other organizations that really interested me.
I give tours of Drake’s campus with Admission Cole-ition, I am the president of Ross Residence Hall’s Executive Council which landed me a seat on the Residence Hall Association. Not many people come to my programs because we are kind of off-campus but my roommate and I always have a fun time planning them anyway. I have also joined Sigma Tau Delta, which is the English honor’s fraternity here on campus. I am also pledging Alpha Phi Omega, which is the only service fraternity at Drake. Both of these organizations are super fun and are helping me make connections.
Ad Club is probably my favorite organization that I have joined. Although we have only had a few meetings everybody has been so welcoming and enthusiastic about the work we’re doing. I’m thinking about attending the student ad summit in the Twin Cities in the spring.
One of my favorite things about being a student here at Drake is the Drake Relays. I’m only a sophomore so I’ve only been to one before but it was one of the coolest, most unexpected gems that I’ve been involved in. I loved the beautiful bulldog contest, the record-breaking, even my early morning parking shifts that I had to work. I even joined the Relays Executive Committee on the Student Activities Board so I can be more involved in the planning this year.
I don’t do much outside of Drake related things unless I’m at home. In which case I love going to concerts with my family and friends, which can get expensive. I also work as a waitress to be able to afford those; I’m always looking out for new artists to go see!
That’s pretty much all you need to know about me, stay tuned to see what else I’ll do!
